인터넽 사전에서는 

before (시간상으로 …보다) 전[앞]에,

prior to …에 앞서, 먼저,

차이점을 말해주지 않고 구별이 없이 ‘전에,,’ 라고만 하니까 

읽는 사람들은 다른 점을 알지 못한다.

 

before; (막연하게) 그 전에,

prior to; 바로 직전에 (명사나 동명사가 따라온다),

"Before attending law school, Janessa worked as a teacher.”

 

바로 직전에,

“Prior to attending law school, Janessa worked as a teacher.”

 

초코레이트를 다음 단계로 가기 전에 (아무때나) 차게만하면 된다

“You must let the chocolate cool before moving on to the next step.”

 

초코레이트를 다음 단계로 가기 바로전에 차게해야한다.

“You must let the chocolate cool prior to moving on to the next step.”

 

prior to 는 법원 서류나 정부 공문서에 많이 나온다. 

신청날자(10월 30일) 바로 전에, prior to October 30 2023.

 

prior to” is fine in “a formal or impersonal(특정 개인과 상관이 없는, 비인간적인) context.”

In other words, you should use “before” when speaking of something more personal, like “Before they were married…” Another reason to avoid “prior to” is that it should be followed by a noun or a gerund (동사에 ing 붙인 동명사).
