블랙박스라는 명칭은 본래 공학 용어로서, 사용법이나 역할은 잘 알려져 있지만 내부의 구조나 작동 원리가 숨겨진 장치를 일컫는 말.

(실제로 항공기용 블랙박스는 소수의 국가 기관이나 전문 기업에서만 내용 해독이 가능하도록 설계되어있다). 때문에 ‘블랙’ 박스라고 하더라도 장치 외관은 검정색이 아닌 오렌지색이나 노란색, 혹은 빨간색을 칠한 경우가 대부분이다. 항공기가 산지나 바다에 추락한 경우에도 블랙박스만은 최대한 눈에 잘 띄어야 하기 때문이다.

 

항공기용 블랙박스는 추락에 의한 충격이나, 침수, 화재에도 견딜 수 있도록 강도 및 밀폐성이 높은 특수 합금으로 제조된다. 또한, 내부에 위치 발신기가 내장되어 있어 사고 후에 탐지기를 사용해 블랙박스를 수색하기도 한다.

다만 경우에 따라서는 충격이 너무 심해 블랙박스 자체가 파손되는 경우도 있으며, 블랙박스 내부의 위치 발신기는 배터리로 작동하기 때문에 추락 후 시간을 너무 오래 끌면 위치 발신기의 작동이 멈춰버려 수색에 곤란을 겪기도 한다.

오늘날에는 항공기뿐 아니라 자동차에도 블랙박스가 설치되곤 한다. 차량용 블랙박스는 크게 두 가지로 나뉜다.

첫 번째는 페달(액셀레이터, 브레이크)이나 스티어링 휠(핸들)의 조작 여부, 차량의 속도 등 차량의 운행에 관련한 정보를 디지털 데이터로 기록하는 장치인 ‘EDR(Event Data Recorder)’ 형식의 제품,

두 번째는 차량 내부의 룸 미러 근처나 대시 보드 등에 설치해 영상 데이터를 촬영, 동영상으로 기록하는 카메라 형식의 제품이다. 카메라 형식의 차량용 블랙박스는 북미에선 대시보드 카메라(dashboard camera), 혹은 대시캠(dashcam)으로 부른다.

 

두 가지 방식의 차량용 블랙박스 모두 사고에 관한 정확한 정황을 분석하는데 쓰인다는 점은 같다. 하지만 EDR은 차량 제조사가 직접 개발해 차량의 제조 과정 중 탑재하는 경우가 대부분이기 때문에 상당수 차량 운전자들은 EDR 탑재 여부를 전혀 의식하지 못하는 경우가 많다.

 

반면, 대시캠(dashcam)은 외부의 전문 업체가 개발, 구매 고객의 요청에 의해 이미 출고된 차량에 추가로 탑재하는 경우가 많다.

그리고 EDR에 기록된 데이터는 차량 제조사의 도움 없이는 데이터를 열람하거나 분석하기가 어렵지만,

대시캠 형식의 차량용 블랙 박스는 차량 전방이나 후방을 촬영하며 동영상을 기록, 사고 발생 시 시시비비를 가리는데 주로 쓰인다
